Saber Marionette J: Novel


Saber Marionette J (セイバーマリオネットJ) light novel is a sci-fi, action, love-comedy that was the original work of Satoru Akahori which became the main foundation for the SM Girls series, the art was done by Tsukasa Kotobuki. The story follows a guy named Otaru Mamiya and his three special marionettes named Lime, Cherry and Blood berry who all possess a “Maiden Circuit” responsible for giving them human personalities and emotions unlike regular marionettes. Otaru was tasked by the leader of Japoness, Ieyasu to fulfill the revival of women in Terra II. Note that the novel does not follow the same story line as the TV series and the manga, the same goes for the other SMJ formats, they exist independently from one another.

Synopsis

The story takes place 300 years after the SS Mesopotamia crash landed on the surface of the planet called Terra II. Only 6 men survived and established six city nations all inhabited by men. As time progressed, the civilization of purely men has begun to decline due to low birth rate mainly caused by the limitation of cloning technology. Among them, the ruler of Gartland, Faust has opted to dominate Terra II with “superior clones”. A Young man from Japoness named, Otaru Mamiya has accidentally activated a marionette named Lime after wandering inside the “Japoness History Museum”, he then became the unwitting master of Lime. At first, Lime does not seem to act like any other marionettes, it’s as if she has emotions. Otaru later meets the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. He revealed to Otaru that Lime was as “sign post” for the upcoming revival of human women and decided to entrust the future to him along with the other marionettes similar to Lime named, Cherry and Bloodberry. Otaru will be then involved in the conflict between Faust and Ieyasu for the revival of women in Terra II.

Series Info

Saber Marionette J novel was serialized in “Monthly Dragon Magazine” from 1994 to 1999. It was published into books from the Fujimi Fantasia library, it has 12 volumes in total. It was written by Satoru Akahori and was originally illustrated by Tsukasa Kotobuki. Although SMR was originally planned to predate this work, due to disagreements between the author and director, SMJ was then prioritized.
